One of things I love about the KOT is that it seems to work really well with any guitar or amp. Clean amp, dirty amp, single coils, humbuckers and P90's all sound great. It sits really well in a band setting but it doesn't change your tone as much as other pedals (eg Tubescreamer). It doesn't do high-gain but if your amp is already dirty it does a great job of tightening up the sound and adding extra gain.

Analog Man, in collaboration with Jim Weider, have come out with the pedal we have been looking for for many years - the King Of Tone (KoT). There are many overdrive pedals on the market, but none of them have been quite right, preserving the tone of the guitar and adding the right amount of overdrive without compromise. There are some good clean boosts available, but they just don't have enough drive to really give your amp the distortion you often want. There are some newer OD pedals that have a great frequency response, but to me they sound too DRY, a bit sterile and cardboardy. There are also some nice sounding pedals available but their sound is too "saturated", losing the touch and feel of your guitar. That is where the King Of Tone pedal comes in - it has enough warm overdrive but still preserves the tones of your quality guitars and amps. If you are looking for a big change in your sound, or a lot of distortion, this is probably not the pedal for you.

Collection: Pro Range

Type: Fuzz

BC183 silicon transistor — medium-high gain with a smooth, almost germanium-like character

Cleans up remarkably well with guitar volume pot

External Sun Dial bias control for tonal shaping from gated/spitting to overdrive-like

By Analogman — one of the most respected boutique fuzz builders in the world

PL Notes

I love fuzz but they can be difficult to use - kind of like learning another instrument. I usually set the volume at unity or above, turn the fuzz up until it's too much then back it off just a smidge (Philip Sayce advice). The bias knob in the middle can yield some interesting and fun tones from gated spitting sounds (anti-clockwise) to more overdrive like (counter clockwise). There are great sounds to be had turning the volume pot down on your guitar too - in fact so many awesome clean tone to be had using a fuzz with the guitar volume down. Don't forget, a lot of the classic sounds were just cranked amps with a fuzz or treble booster then a lot of tonal adjustment coming from the guitar controls. *Final note - they are noisy, embrace it.

BC183 : Medium high gain.
